Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge: a giant dragon soaring on the sea

    The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB) is a bridge and tunnel project connecting Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macao in China. It is located in the waters of Lingdingyang of the Pearl River Estuary in Guangdong Province, China, and is the southern ring section of the Pearl River Delta Expressway.
    The HZMB began construction on December 15, 2009, completed the completion of the main part of the bridge on July 7, 2017, completed the acceptance of the main part of the bridge on February 6, 2018, and opened for service at 9 am on October 24, 2018.
    The hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge starts from the artificial island of Hong Kong Port near Hong Kong International Airport in the east, and connects zhuhai and Macao artificial islands across the waters of Lingdingyang in the South China Sea in the west, ending at The Hongwan Interchange in Zhuhai. The length of the bridge and tunnel is 55 km, of which 29.6 km is the main bridge and 41.6 km is the link between Hong Kong port and Zhuhai-Macao port. The bridge deck is a two-way six-lane highway with a design speed of 100 km/h. The total investment of the project is 126.9 billion yuan.
 


 

    The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge is famous for its super-large construction scale, unprecedented construction difficulty and top construction technology. The chief designer of the bridge project is Meng Fanchao, the chief engineer is Su Quanke, and the general manager and chief engineer of the Island tunnel project is Lin Ming.
    From Dec 1, 2018, the first batch of non-operating cars from Guangdong and Macao will be allowed to pass through the cross-boundary section of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge without additional visa. On February 16, 2020, the HZMB Authority announced that all vehicles on the HZMB will be exempted from tolls from February 17 until the COVID-19 prevention and control work is completed. The specific deadline will be announced later. Starting from 5 April 2020, Hong Kong and Macao will adjust the customs clearance service hours of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge at their respective ports. From May 3, 2020, the original customs clearance time of the Zhuhai-Macao passenger inspection Hall at the hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge port between Macao and Zhuhai will be restored. On August 16, 2020, the Zhuhai-Macao Freight Channel at the Port of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge was officially opened.
